Easy Ways to Go Green in your Living Room! post image

Easy Ways to Go Green in your Living Room!

Why Go Green in your home? The reasons for building an eco-friendly house, manufacturing an organic sofa, wearing an organic cotton shirt and even using products like Burt’s Bees for taking care of your skin are basically the same as utilizing green methods in your home.  Using green products creates a healthier space for you, a more energy efficient space and uses environmentally friendly manufacturing methods which protect resources for future generations.  Every “green” purchase has quite the impact on numerous important things like your health, the environment and energy savings.  There are several ways that you can redesign your Living room with eco-friendly style.

If you want to make a large impact on your room by changing your flooring or wall paint you won’t have to look far for great products.  The most green types of flooring are those from renewable resources – fast growing bamboo, sea grass, tile, cork, wool, and linoleum top the list. Wood floors should at least be made from FSC wood, which is certified to come from sustainable forests. Most tropical woods such as mahogany are rainforest woods, so we avoid them.  Carpet is something to really look at – wool is renewable, and some companies such as Shaw floors have carpet made from recycled nylon that is also recyclable, so once it is worn out, it can be made into carpet again – this is called “cradle to cradle” manufacturing.

The main criteria for “eco-friendly” or “green” paints are the amounts of VOCs in the paint product.  VOC stands for volatile organic compounds.  These compounds have been linked to certain health illnesses and cancers.  These are gases that are emitted in the air in your home after the paint has been applied to the walls.   Top brands like Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams have quality Non-VOC paints that go on just as well as high quality paints.  Look for the Green Seal on paint labels.  Most products today have a “green label”.  The Carpet and Rug Institute has their own “green label” named CRI Green Label, in which they rate a product’s emission of VOCs.  This is important information for creating good air quality in our spaces and our health.

When it comes to furniture, fabrics, drapery and area rugs you can employ some of the same green logic when it comes to selecting products.  You can look for products that have the GreenGuard label to ensure low toxicity emissions for a healthier space.  Yes, even furniture can off-gas depending on how it’s built.

Also refer to the Sustainable Furnishings Council list of manufacturers for buying new eco-friendly furniture.  I always see if I can reuse an existing piece of furniture such as an old sofa or chair.  They can be reupholstered and have new cushions made, so they will be like brand new.  Wood pieces can be refinished or painted.  My favorite organic fabric is grown, spun and milled close by in North Carolina.  Not only is it free of pesticides and locally harvested, it is also incredibly soft and durable.  It’s perfect for upholstery or slipcovers.

It’s pretty simple when it comes to lighting.  Change out your bulbs to either CFLs or purchase new LED light fixtures.  LED lighting is much more energy efficient and comes in softer shades of light than CFLs.  The decorative type of LED lights fixtures that are available are hard wired, such as wall sconces, chandeliers, pendants and track lighting.  LED lights are green because of their energy efficiency, which is 80% more than an incandescent bulb, longer life span – 22 years and they do not contain any toxic or hazardous materials.  They help save the planet – while keeping more green in your pocket.

Buying products that are either manufactured with recycled content or are recyclable, made from a renewable source, at a zero waste facility or within 500 miles of home is not difficult these days especially since companies make it easier to find out this information on their websites.  Going green can be as simple as repurposing something you already own and saving it from going into a landfill.  What is good for people is good for the environment.  There’s no reason to ignore the “green” options available to us as consumers.  Visit Poshsurfside.com for a list of “Green” furniture and fabric manufacturers.

What Kind of Rug Is It? post image

What Kind of Rug Is It?

Most Americans refer to any wool area rug with geometric designs and flowers, as an “Oriental Rug” or “Persian Rug”.  At one time the ancient Persian Empire extended from North Africa to India, and included Turkey and Armenia. The world of rugs and carpets includes over 10,000 different types, identified by the patterns of the villages in which they were woven.  There are thousands of unique peoples and languages in this part of the world, with a history of weaving dating back at least 7,000 years.  Most of the rugs and carpets popular in our country today are reproductions of these ancient designs, and many are produced outside the Middle East, in India and China.  They are still commonly named for the cultures that produced the original designs.  Here are some of the styles you may want in your decorating project:

Soumack Weave Rug in Gold and Cream

Soumack: a particular type of stitch identifies the Soumack rug; it’s a durable, double-pass stitch that makes a thicker flatweave carpet.  While not a plush pile carpet, Soumacks are very sturdy and attractive, incorporating repeating geometric designs of Turkish influence and borders and floral elements from ancient Persia.

Oushak:woven in western Turkey since the fifteenth century, Oushaks have a low knot count (referring to knots per square inch), resulting in a looser weave and larger, more abstract patterns.  Despite the low knot count, they are very sought after because of their traditionally soft, light colors, such as apricots, soft greens, saffron and light brown. The silkiest of wool gives them a beautiful sheen.

Antique Persian Carpet

Persian: a traditional Persian carpet has a high knot count – 200 to 400 knots per inch for the finest. The tiny stitches allow for intricate patterns and realistic detail, so Persian carpets are known for their depictions of flowers, trees, and animals.  Persian rug and carpet patterns are named for their region of origin – Heriz, Kashan, Qum, and Bakhtiar are all designs you may encounter that are called “Persian”.  The finest were the carpets of royalty, and can be very large and extravagantly patterned works of art.

Mughal Carpet, 18th century

Indian or Mughal: Fine Persian weavers were brought to India, where they spread their craft and absorbed Indian design motifs and colors.  Indian carpets can be bright colored and are distinguished by realistic depictions of animals, people and flowers, much like paintings.

Antique Kilim Rug

Kilim: Kilims are flat-woven rugs, made by a weaving technique similar to fabric, so they have no pile and are often reversible.  They are used as hanging tapestries and floorcoverings and are made by many cultures, so there is a wide variety of style and color.  All have geometric designs, from simple stripes to complex animals, serrated diamonds and leaves.  Faded reds and greens and rich indigo are favored by American collectors.

Antique Tribal Rug Used as Saddle Bag

Tribal: Tribal Rugs were woven by Nomadic peoples, so they are quite small since they were made on traveling looms.  Each is one of a kind, as they were made by individuals to be sold at market.  Designs are geometric, with stylized flowers, diamond and star shapes, and bars of color.  They also usually have a lower thread count and rough texture; the complex geometric patterns are very appealing today, and they are often made into pillows.

Five Easy Tips for your Kitchen Mini Makeover! post image

Five Easy Tips for your Kitchen Mini Makeover!

With Spring just around the corner, it’s time to get ready for another round of entertaining.  I call it the Spring Itch!  A favorite room of mine is the kitchen when it comes to room makeovers because so much of our time is spent in it with family and friends, cooking great meals.  Nowadays, the kitchen does so much more than just cook.  Here are my five Mini makeover ideas for the kitchen:

Kitchen - After Makeover

Kitchen – After Makeover

Kitchen – Before Makeover

1)      Paint

Paint is my favorite medium because it is the least expensive and quickest way to drastically change the look of any space.  You can paint the walls or even put a coat of a lovely color on your cabinets.  If you have wood flooring, how about a stenciled design?  You could go with the classic checkerboard on the diagonal or even something more lyrical.

2)     Re-facing your Cabinets

This is the perfect do-it-yourself project that will transform old shabby cabinets to fresh and updated cabinets!  Basically you remove all your old doors and drawer faces and purchase new ones at a local building supply store.  You’ll need to measure all your existing doors and do a quantity count before you head to the store.  Add new hinges and hardware to the new doors and you won’t believe the difference it will make in the overall appearance of your kitchen.

3)     New Lighting

Get rid of those fluorescents!  Really!  Use incandescent or LED lights to warm up your space and provide good task lighting with a softer glow.  You’ll also no longer have that annoying fluorescent humming sound.  If you have space to add a decorative chandelier over an island or pendants over a bar area, don’t be bashful.   Use decorative fixtures that have personality and color!  This is your opportunity to add a sophisticated punch to your kitchen décor.

4)     Tile Backsplash

Not only is tile great for updating your kitchen and adding a touch of interest, it is also very practical especially around the stove and sink areas.  Tiles and sealed stone are resistant to staining and extremely easy to clean.  If you want a modern look, use larger format tiles like a 12”x12” turned on the diagonal.  For more traditional homes, stay will smaller 4”x4” or 3”x6” subway tiles.  Add decos or decorative tiles into the mix for a more personalized design.

5)     Get Organized

Eliminating unnecessary clutter and small appliances on the countertops creates aesthetic and functional improvements to your kitchen.  First remove everything from your countertops.  Only put back items that need to be easily accessible and that are used every day.  The other items can be stored in cabinets or maybe it is time to donate them.  You may want to purchase attractive canisters to sit on your countertops for small items or foods that you need to reach quickly.

I hope these design tips help you to make positive changes in your kitchen as well as make everyday a little less hectic and a more beautiful experience.
